I tried Tatcha’s Silk Serum specifically because it’s marketed as a gentler alternative to retinol, not a replacement for it. This serum is built around cranberry extract and sea fennel instead of an actual retinoid. It delivers a smoother, more even texture without the dryness or irritation retinol can bring. I’ve tried other gentle retinol alternatives, including bakuchiol, and this is the gentlest of all of them. If your skin can’t handle retinol or you can’t use retinol, I haven’t found anything else quite like this one.

Since I have combination skin, I’ve learned this one works best for me in winter. If your skin runs dry or normal, you likely won’t need to wait for winter; it’s rich enough to work well for you year-round.

If you’ve heard that you shouldn’t use scrubs but you still want to exfoliate, this is a good cleanser to try. I genuinely enjoyed using it, enough that I went through the entire jar without hesitation, which isn’t something I can say about every mask in my routine. This was one of the first cleansing oils I ever used, back before oil cleansing was as popular as it is now, and I still reach for it. A little goes a long way, so a bottle lasts, and it removes makeup without leaving my skin feeling stripped. That said, I’ve since tried other cleansing oils that do a similar job for less. The haruharu Wonder Black Rice Moisture Cleansing Oil is fragrance-free if that matters to you, and the Beauty of Joseon Ginseng Cleansing Oil has a bit of added fragrance and feels closer to Tatcha’s version in texture.

For anyone with oily or combination skin, this one does what it promises. It’s lightweight, it controls shine without stripping your skin, and it leaves a matte finish that holds up well through the day. But after using it for a while, I tried the belif Aqua Bomb Cream and found it did a similar job for a noticeably lower price. If you already own Tatcha’s version and love it, there’s no reason to switch. If you’re deciding where to spend, I’d recommend the Belif first.

The Dewy Serum Resurfacing and Plumping Treatment
This one is really about hydration, that’s the main reason to buy it, not the exfoliation. There’s a mild, fruit-based exfoliation in the formula, but it’s minimal enough that I wouldn’t call it a draw on its own. If your skin leans sensitive, the hydration comes with barely-there resurfacing rather than anything that could irritate. I liked it while I used it, but I’ve since found the haruharu Wonder Black Rice Serum does something very similar for a fraction of the price.

The Rice Polish Foaming Enzyme Powder
To be honest, I don’t love the concept of this product. Pouring a powder into your hand over the sink, trying not to spill it before it even touches your face, isn’t a step I want in my routine. I’d rather my exfoliant just be built into my cleanser from the start. If the powder process doesn’t bother you the way it bothers me, Peach and Lily makes a version at a noticeably lower price, and I can’t find a reason to pick the Tatcha one over it.

Luminous Deep Hydration Lifting Mask
I love a sheet mask that leaves my skin looking plump and lit from within, and this was one of the best I’d tried at the time. But that was before K-beauty sheet masks were as widely available as they are now. These days, I reach for the Biodance Bio-Collagen Real Deep Mask instead. It uses a similar red algae and amino acid combination to lock in moisture, it skips the added alcohol and fragrance, and it costs less per mask
Tatcha Products That Didn’t Work For Me
Luminous Dewy Skin Mist: This one can be used as a facial mist or a setting spray, but on my combination skin, neither worked. It’s formulated to seal in moisture, which makes it heavier and greasier than a mist should feel, better suited to genuinely dry skin than mine.
Dewy Milk Moisturizer: I love a milky moisturizer, so I expected to love this one too. Instead, it left my skin feeling like it had a film over it rather than actually hydrated. It’s formulated to sit on top of skin and lock moisture in, more useful as a pre-foundation step than a daily moisturizer.
Silk Sunscreen SPF 50: The texture felt nice going on, and the broad-spectrum SPF 50 protection is real. But I noticed my skin felt tingly not long after applying it, and when I looked, my face was visibly red. That’s not a reaction I’ve had from sunscreen before, and it was enough to make me stop.
Kissu Lip Mask: The formula itself is lovely, but the open-top container means you’re stuck using your fingers if you lose the included spatula, which happens easily. Tatcha does sell a tube version, the Kissu Lip Treatment, but I haven’t tried it to know if it fixes the issue.
