I’ve owned an Apple Watch for years and never really questioned it, until I started feeling frustrated with the battery life and became more interested in deeper health data, especially sleep. When the Oura Ring went on sale, I decided to finally try a smart ring and see if it could replace my Apple Watch.

Right now, I’m using both the Apple Watch and the Oura Ring daily. Each one does certain things really well, and each has some downsides. Here’s my honest experience with both and who I think each device is best for.

Oura Ring vs Apple Watch

Apple Watch: Pros and Cons

Step & Workout Tracking

Both the Apple Watch and the Oura Ring track steps, but the Apple Watch is noticeably better at it. The step count feels more accurate, and workout tracking is more detailed and reliable. If workouts are your main focus, this is where the Apple Watch shines.

Time & Notifications

One thing I truly love about the Apple Watch is that it’s still a watch. My job is very time-based, and I need to check the time frequently. I don’t always want—or am able—to pull out my phone, so being able to glance at my wrist is essential.

I also appreciate being able to see notifications at a glance. I don’t need to check every notification, but it’s helpful to know when something important comes through.

Battery Life (The Biggest Downside)

The biggest issue with the Apple Watch is the battery. If I put it on at 6 a.m., it doesn’t make it through the full day. Because of that, I can’t reliably wear it at night to track sleep.

For this reason, I can’t really speak to how well the Apple Watch tracks sleep. It simply hasn’t been practical for me to use it that way.

Design

The Apple Watch isn’t particularly attractive, but you can change out the strap to make it look nicer. I personally keep the basic strap because I care more about durability than appearance.

Oura Ring: Pros and Cons

Design & Wearability

The Oura Ring comes in a variety of colors and finishes. At the time I purchased mine, only a few were on sale, and I didn’t feel it was worth paying extra just for a specific color.

You can buy silicone covers if you want to change the look or protect the finish.

That said, I find the Oura Ring to be very big and noticeable. It’s not attractive at all in my opinion; it has a chunky, masculine look. I don’t wear other rings, so I’m okay wearing it, but if I had a beautiful wedding ring or other jewelry I loved, I wouldn’t want to pair it with the Oura Ring. It cheapens the look.

Battery Life (The Best Feature of the Oura Ring)

My favorite thing about the Oura Ring is the battery life. I can wear it for about five days between charges. That means I can wear it every night and consistently track sleep without thinking about charging.

If you love data, this is a huge win. I really enjoy seeing how well—or not well—I’m sleeping.

Health Data & Insights

The Oura Ring takes your vitals frequently, which allows it to track changes in heart rate and body temperature. What I really appreciate is how the app uses that data to give personalized health suggestions.

This is the kind of AI integration I actually find useful. It’s not just numbers, but guidance based on patterns in your body.

Things to Be Careful About

You need to be mindful about moisture with the Oura Ring. I make sure my finger is completely dry before putting it back on after washing my hands. I usually remove it when washing dishes and don’t shower or swim with it.

Which One Should You Choose?

Choose a smart watch (like the Apple Watch) if:

  • You want accurate step and workout tracking
  • You need to check the time frequently
  • Notifications matter to you
  • You’re an average exerciser who wants solid fitness tracking

If you’re a more intense runner or swimmer, you may want to look into Garmin or the Apple Watch Ultra.

Choose the Oura Ring if:

  • You’re more focused on sleep tracking and recovery
  • Cycle tracking is important to you
  • You want long battery life
  • You enjoy health insights and personalized suggestions

Final Thoughts

I hope this comparison was helpful if you are trying to decide between the Apple Watch and the Oura Ring.
