Life as an adult is full of responsibilities like work, taking care of the house, paying bills, and caring for children if you have them. After doing all the things that have to be done, there isn’t much time for things that bring joy.

As a Type A, Enneagram 3, overachiever with my own business, I pretty much never stop. Even if it looks like I’m not doing anything, I can guarantee that I have 1,345,238 tabs open in my mind.

Of course going all the time, working all the time, and being under pressure all the time, is not good. It is exhausting and leads to stress and anxiety.

When Getaway House contacted me, I was not in the best place. I was stressed out about everything from my business to my children. Honestly, I was a mess and barely keeping it together.

I knew that booking a stay would give me something to look forward to and it would force me to take some much needed time for myself.

Getaway House: An Escape From Portland

Getaway House Portland

So what exactly is a Getaway House? On the outside, it looks like one of those tiny container houses. But on the inside, it looks and feels like a cabin. You still have most of your current luxuries like electricity, a bathroom with a shower, a stovetop to cook on, a refrigerator, heating, and air conditioning.

In the kitchen area, there are pots and pans, plates, glasses to drink out of, mugs, knives for cooking, and utensils for eating. They even have provisions you can purchase like oatmeal and tea.

Getaway House Kitchen

There is a small bathroom with all of the essentials. In the shower, there are large containers of shampoo, conditioner, and body wash so you can leave yours at home. They even provide towels so you don’t need to pack any either.

Then there is the big beautiful bed complete with sheets, pillows, and a light comforter. The bed just looked and felt like heaven.

Getaway House Portland doesn’t have WIFI and there is no cell phone service. No email. No sharing on Instagram. No YouTube or Netflix. I know that can sound scary to be so disconnected, but honestly, it is what made the trip so remarkable.

No connection means you have your entire stay to connect with nature, spend time with your trip companion, or be alone with your thoughts.

Each cabin has its own campfire located just outside the cabin. If you don’t bring your own there is firewood and fire-starting kit you can purchase. A lighter is available in the kitchen.

I absolutely love spending time by the fire. Since it gets dark really early in the winter, make your fire early and treat yourself to a S’more before dinner. If you want to cook your dinner over the fire, you’ll need to bring the stuff to do that. You can’t use the Getaway House pots and pans on the fire. I’d also suggest bringing your own lantern if you want to cook outside so you can see what you are doing.

Frequently Asked Questions

Postcards

Is it similar to camping?

Yes and no. Yes because you are out in nature and you are disconnected. Also, you do need some outdoor knowledge like knowing how to make a fire. But also no because you still have water, electricity, a stove, and a comfy bed.

How close are the other cabins?

You can see the other cabins dotted through the grounds. You are close enough to the other cabins to see them but not so close that it doesn’t feel private.

Did you get cell phone reception and is there WIFI?

The entire point of Getaway House is to disconnect, so there is no WIFI on the grounds. We lost all cell phone connection several miles out from the site. Make sure you have your directions written down beforehand.

How do you check-in and check-out?

The day you are scheduled to arrive, you will receive a message with the exact location you are headed to, your cabin name, and your access code.

Is there heat in the winter or air conditioning in the summer?

There is no need to worry about being cold. The Getaway House had both heat and air conditioning that you can control. PS. If you are super sensitive to sound, bring earplugs or earbuds because the heater does make noise.

Is it good for kids?

It really depends on the kids. The entire site is supposed to be peaceful and quiet. I know my kids would be too loud. Also, keep in mind that the maximum capacity for the one bed is 2 people and the max for the two bed house is 4 people.

What should I bring?

You really don’t need to bring much. Obviously clothes and anything you need to live. Food to eat. You could bring a lantern so you can cook outside. Tools for cooking outside like a skewer for hotdogs. We brought our own firewood but you can buy it there. Other than that, you could bring a board game. Or if you like to read, you could bring a book.

Wow I so would love to do this experience. We have nothing like that here but guess what? Last summer I nearly booked a 2 nights in a similar place but smaller while I was in Slovenia. Unfortuntely I had to change my mind because my husband and I are always travelling with two dogs and it was a really small accomodation for the 4 of us! Just watched the video, loved it!! What a fantastic view from that window!!!
