I love a good capsule wardrobe. Not only is a capsule wardrobe cost-effective but it is an environmentally friendly way to look great every day. When you can shop in most stores, it is easy to build a cute and affordable capsule wardrobe. However, building a capsule wardrobe using plus-sized pieces is MUCH more difficult. So to help a sister out, I scoured the internet far and wide to put together the best plus-size capsule wardrobe for fall.

FALL 2021 PLUS SIZE CAPSULE WARDROBE

Outerwear

Depending on where you live, the temperatures can fluctuate daily during the fall. Here in the PNW, the temperatures don’t change that much from day to day. However, the weather won’t get cool until October, and then the rainy season will start. For outerwear, I went with a casual utility jacket, a cute denim jacket, and a hooded raincoat. If you live somewhere with less rain, you could switch out the raincoat for a leather jacket or a blazer.

Utility Jacket: Madewell Utility Jacket // Target

Denim Jacket: Madewell // Old Navy Medium Wash

Hooded Raincoat: Lauren Ralph Lauren Rain Jacket // Target Rain Jacket

Shirts, Sweaters, and Tees

Who here has 50 shirts but only wears a handful of them? I know I used to be guilty of this.

For this capsule, I wanted to make sure you had enough options for tops while also not going overboard.

I stuck to neutrals but added some earthy greens to make sure everything went together while also having a fall feel. You can pick any colors you would like but I recommend sticking to two or three colors that work well together.

Sweater: JCrew Cashmere Sweater // Target Crewneck Sweater

Cardigan: Nordstrom Rack // Old Navy // Target Open Front Cardigan

Print: JCrew Silk Floral // Old Navy Floral // Eloquii Elements

Long Sleeve Tee Shirt: Old Navy // Target // Land’s End

Stripe: Target Striped Shirt // Old Navy Short Sleeve Striped Shirt

Puff Sleeve: Eloquii Puff Sleeve // Target Puff Sleeve

Pants

Most of the pants and jeans that you already own will match well with the clothes in this capsule. Here I just selected some of my favorites in case you need to fill a gap in your wardrobe.

Black Pants: Old Navy Chino Pants // Target Wide Leg Trousers // Madewell Black Jeans

Dark Wash Jeans: Universal Standard Wide Leg // Levi’s Bootcut Jeans

Relaxed: Eloquii Distressed // Old Navy Ripped Jeans

Dresses

I have always been a fan of dresses. One piece and you are dressed. It really doesn’t get any easier than that. I recommend having an easy-to-wear day dress and one dress that is a touch dressier.

Casual Dress: Nordstrom Rack Midi Dress // Target Dress (Madewell Dupe)

Dressier Dress: Anthropologie Maxi // Anthropologie Halter Maxi

Handbags and Totes

When it comes to bags I keep things down to a minimum. For fall, I highly recommend having one bag that goes with everything.

Tote: Madewell Ziptop Tote // Target Tote

Shoes

When it comes to shoes, I will always choose comfort over style. My go-to shoes are always flat or low heeled, perfect for running errands or chasing around kiddos.

Boots: Chelsea Boot // Wide-Calf Naturalizer Boots // Walmart Bootie

Flat Shoes: Sperry Loafers // Lulus Loafers // Dr. Marten Oxfords

Tennis Shoe: Veja // Converse // Adidas

Your Plus Size Capsule Wardrobe For Fall

Because a capsule wardrobe is filled with staples to wear throughout this season and the next, we opted for higher-quality pieces as our first choice. But because we understand that not everyone has a large budget, we included affordable options as much as possible. To make your capsule more affordable, bring your shopping list with you to consignment and thrift shops.

Also don’t feel like you need to buy new clothes to fill your capsule for the season. Assess your current wardrobe and pull from items you already have. Next, identify any gaps. Finally, make a shopping list for the items you truly need.
