Most days I am reaching for a neutral, one and done eyeshadow. When I wear one at all. But every once in a while, when I want to try something fun, I reach for colorful eyeshadow. Cautiously. With absolutely no idea what the PTA is going to think.
And I am not alone. After years of being told to keep it subtle, keep it neutral, keep it beige, something is shifting. Color is back, and honestly, it snuck up on me. If you have been watching from the sidelines the way I have, equal parts curious and nervous, this post is for you.
I spent some time trying out a range of products and not everything made it into this post. What did make it are the ones that were easy to use, organized into three levels based on how much of a color commitment they ask for. Some are barely a step outside neutral. Some are going to turn heads. Start wherever feels right for you.
Tier 1: Toe in the Water
A little color. Still completely wearable. Low commitment, low stakes.
Maybelline Color Tattoo Longwear Multi-Use Eyeshadow Stix
This is where I would tell a fellow color skeptic to start. The price is low enough that trying it feels like no big deal, and the tip is thinner than a standard eyeshadow stick, which makes application easier and more precise. The shade range leans more neutral than the name suggests, which is actually reassuring. I Am Fierce sounds bold but it is a shimmery olive green that is more wearable than you would expect. They also make a white shade that I love as a base layer or for a little mod moment. Good entry point, low stakes.
NYX Epic Wear Liner Stick
Technically, this is an eyeliner. But the formula is creamy enough to use across the whole lid, which makes it an easy way to bring in some color without buying something new. I own multiple shades of this liner, but my favorite is Berry Goth. If you already have one of these sitting in your makeup bag, you might be closer to the color trend than you thought.
Tier 2: Getting Warmer
More of a statement. Still approachable. You might get a compliment.
MAC Dazzleshadow 12HR Eyeshadow Stick
MAC knows eyeshadow, and this stick delivers. The formula goes on smoothly and the wear time is real. It comes in eight shades total and I would genuinely welcome all of them into my collection. The only thing I wish is that the range were a little bigger. The tip is standard stick width, fine for the lid, but not precise enough if you want to use it as a liner.
Anastasia Beverly Hills Glider Smudge Proof Cream Eyeshadow Stick
The color range here is the whole point. There are so many shades that it is genuinely hard to pick just one. Worth knowing before you shop: the intensity varies. The more neutral shades are a little sheerer, but if you go for something bolder, you get real color payoff. Amethyst is a sparkling purple black with pink reflects. Same tip situation as the MAC, not a precision liner, but great across the lid.
Tier 3: Full Send
You are going for it. No apologies.
Danessa Myricks Twin Flames Liquid Eyeshadow
I will be honest. This one is outside my comfort zone. I chose the shade Love Spell, a baby pink with a green gold shift. For me, this is concert or special event territory. But if you have been looking for something to turn heads, this is it. The formula works well, but it asks for a little patience. Do one eye at a time and blend before it sets.
Final Thoughts on Colorful Eyeshadow
Colorful eyeshadow is not as complicated as we have been led to believe. Most of these go on in one swipe. None of them require a brush or a tutorial. The learning curve is mostly just getting comfortable seeing color on your own face, and that part just takes a little time.
