Today’s post, Better Sleep Habits For A Happier You, is part of the 31 Days To A Happier You Challenge. If you are new to the series, welcome. I am glad you are here!
Everybody know that sleep is important. But for some reason, when we have full schedule, it is the first thing that many of us cut. We sacrifice our sleep for nights out on the town, research papers that are due tomorrow, and Netflix binges. Most of the time we shrug it off as no big deal, but a couple of hours less sleep a day takes a toll over time.
I’m not just talking about the health issues that come from lack of sleep. Lack of sleep also impacts our happiness and wellbeing. Did you know that those who get less sleep are more likely to have issues with negative thoughts and negative self talk?
But wait, your negative self talk is what keeps you awake? Ruminating over past mistakes is a common issue and a tough one to crack. Instead of dwelling, try using self-affirmations or refocusing techniques.
If rumination isn’t an issue but you still find yourself not getting enough sleep, there are a few things you can do. First, try to set yourself up for sleeping success by having a nighttime routine and try my favorite hacks for better sleep. If you are still having issues with sleep, you might need to see a healthcare professional. Issues like sleep apnea, chronic pain, and low oxygen flow can keep you feeling tired. Plus they are serious health issues that shouldn’t be ignored.
Take a look at your current sleep situation and see what needs to be adjusted. Do you need to go to bed earlier? Are you trying to convince yourself you are a night owl when your body is telling you something different? After looking at these things, come up with a new bedtime routine that will leave you well rested and less grumpy.
