Be Happier By Helping Others

How Helping Others Can Make You Happier

Helping others can make you feel good and improve your mental health. When you help someone, your brain releases feel-good chemicals like oxytocin and endorphins, which can reduce stress and make you happy. Additionally, helping others can increase your self-esteem and give you a sense of purpose and fulfillment. People who regularly help others report feeling happier and more satisfied with their lives.

Studies have shown that doing kind things for others can improve your mental health. Helping others can reduce feelings of anxiety, depression, and stress. It can also help you cope with your own problems by giving you a sense of perspective and meaning. When you help others, you feel more connected to the people around you, which can lead to greater happiness and life satisfaction.

Different Ways You Can Help Others

Donation and charity work

One way to help others is by making donations to charities or causes that you care about. Many organizations rely on donations to support their work and make a difference in the world. Donating money or goods can make a big difference to those in need. You can also get involved in fundraising efforts or organize your own charity events to support your favorite causes.

Volunteering

Another way to help others is by volunteering your time and skills. There are countless organizations and causes that rely on volunteers to carry out their work. Volunteering can be a great way to give back to your community, meet new people, and gain valuable experience. You can volunteer at a local hospital, school, animal shelter, or food bank. There are also many opportunities for virtual volunteering, which can be done from the comfort of your own home.

Helping friends and family

Helping your friends and family is another way to make a positive impact on others. You can offer to help with tasks like babysitting, running errands, or cooking a meal. Small acts of kindness can go a long way in helping someone in need. Additionally, taking the time to listen and offer emotional support can be invaluable to those going through a difficult time.

Random acts of kindness

Random acts of kindness are small, unexpected gestures that can make someone’s day. You can do things like leave a kind note for someone, pay for someone’s coffee, or hold the door open for someone. Random acts of kindness can create a ripple effect of positivity and inspire others to do the same.

My Experience Helping Others

From my days as a Girl Scout to my years serving in AmeriCorps after college, helping others has always been a large part of my life. In fact, my desire to help others is a large part of why I started Feisty Life Media.

During college, I was very lost and had no idea what to do with my life. When I graduated I signed on for a year of AmeriCorps, thinking it would buy me some time before I had to figure out what I was going to do. After one year of AmeriCorps, I signed up for two more years of service. During those years of service, I was able to meet so many wonderful people. I made a circle of friends that also cared about helping others. But most importantly I was able to build relationships with the people in the communities where I served. While I may not be in contact with everyone I met, those relationships have had a long-lasting impact on who I am.

In addition to building relationships, I was also able to gain a sense of purpose. I went into my years of service thinking it would be a transition period. Instead, I left with an understanding that helping others, and being an agent for positive change, was my purpose in life.

Final Thoughts on Helping Others

In summary, helping others can make you happier. By doing good deeds, whether big or small, you can positively impact your own well-being while also making a difference in the world.

It’s important to remember that helping others doesn’t have to be complicated or require a lot of time or money. Simple acts of kindness, like smiling at a stranger or helping a friend in need, can go a long way.

So, I encourage you to take action and make a difference in your own way. Whether it’s volunteering at a local organization, donating to a cause you believe in, or just being a little kinder to those around you, your actions can make a real impact.

By helping others, you not only improve the world around you but also boost your own happiness and well-being. So, let’s all do our part and make the world a better place, one good deed at a time.
