10 Skincare Mistakes You Are Making

If there is one thing I love it is skincare. I am a skincare addict and I am not afraid to admit it. Despite my lifelong love of skincare, I didn’t always have the best habits. At one point in my life, I have been guilty of making all of these skincare mistakes. Luckily for you, I am going to share the 10 skincare mistakes you are probably making plus some additional handy tips.

Going To Bed With Makeup On

We’ve all done it. You come home from a  night out of the town, take off your high heels, and then pass out in bed. If you fall asleep with your makeup on a couple of times a year, that’s not going to be the end of the world. However, going to bed with a full face of makeup clogs and enlarges your pores.

You really should be removing all of your makeup every day. The type of cleansers you need depends on how much makeup you are wearing and your skin type. If you wear a full coverage foundation and waterproof mascara, you’ll need a different cleanser than someone that only wears lipgloss and mascara.

Bonus Tip: If you know you are going to have a late-night, get some makeup removing wipes to keep by the bed. It isn’t as good as removing all of your makeup but it is better than nothing.

Not Cleansing Correctly

Now that we have established the importance of removing your makeup, there is a right or wrong way to cleanse your face. When I was younger, my skin was super super oily. I washed my face two times a day with a deep cleanser until my face felt squeaky clean. I thought I needed to do that to remove the oils from my skin. But in reality, I was making my oily skin worse! Don’t have oily skin, you could still be making some mistakes while cleansing.

I am a huge fan of double cleansing, especially if you are a makeup wearer. Double cleansing will make sure you have removed all of your makeup/dirt and that you have actually cleansed your skin. When picking the second cleanser, make sure you pick a cleanser suited to your skin type and your skin concerns, but that doesn’t strip your skin.

Not Exfoliating Properly

Acne scars and pits, large pores, redness, and texture issues are all things I battle daily. I used to think I could exfoliate away my pores and scars. Unfortunately, all it did was make my sensitive skin very red and angry. Of course, when I found out I had rosacea, I went the opposite direction and quite exfoliating all together. That lead to a dull complexion and lots of yucky flakey skin. Eww!

You should be exfoliating your skin once or twice a week to remove the layers of dead skin. By exfoliating, you will allow your skin to absorb the serums and treatments better. Exfoliating in moderation will keep you from stripping your skin of natural oils or inflaming your skin.

Not Washing Your Makeup Brushes

Okay, want to hear something gross… I never washed my makeup brushes ever. Until a year and a half ago, I didn’t even know I needed to clean them. But once I saw a few stories about what can happen to you if don’t clean your brushes, I didn’t need to be told to clean them again. Google it if you are curious. I’ll spare you the disturbing images here.

Cleaning your brushes isn’t actually that difficult. There are tons of products and devices to make the chore super convenient. If you want to keep things simple, you can use Dawn dish soap.

Popping Pimples and Picking At Your Face

PLEASE STOP DOING THIS! I ruined my skin by doing both of these things. Some people never scar, I get a scar with every pimple. Picking and popping them made the scars even worse. It is much better to have a pimple for three days than a scar for the rest of your life.

If you are an adult and find that you are breaking out again, resist the urge to pop and pick. Instead, pick up some pimple shrinking products.

Sleeping On Dirty Sheets

I hate doing laundry almost as much as I hate emptying the dishwasher. Despite this, I still make it a point to wash my sheets every Sunday. Why? Because washing my face and body gets me clean, laying on dirty sheets is literally rolling around in sweat, dirt, and bacteria. No thank you.

If you want to up your skincare routine wash your sheets and pick up a silk pillowcase. You’ll have clearer skin, fewer wrinkles, and your hair will be less frizzy.

Taking Extra Hot Showers

It’s been super hot here in the PNW and I don’t have ac, so this hasn’t been a problem lately. I’ve been taking cold showers on purpose. However, in the winter I am known to steam up the bathroom from taking a hot shower.

The heat from hot water combined with soap will soften your skin but also strip away its natural protective barriers. Instead of taking a hot shower, a warm one is okay.

Bonus Tip: Taking a cold shower or rinsing in cold water, can actually make you feel more awake than a hot shower. Plus it is actually good for your skin and hair.

Not Drinking Enough Water

We all know we should be drinking more water, but many of us still aren’t. I’ve been actively working on increasing the amount of water I drink, so I know first hand how hard it can be.

Get yourself a pretty refillable water bottle, drink a cup of water before your morning coffee, substitute water for a non-water drink… You get the idea. Water is essential for life but it so good for your skin. It helps your skin stay healthy and glowing.

Eating The Wrong Foods

I know there are studies that contradict this. Some people say what you eat has little to do with your skin. Some people argue that you are what you eat. I know for an absolute fact that what I eat has an impact on my skin. I’ve seen it with my own two eyes. If I eat a lot of greasy food, lots of salt, or things that are super spicy you can see it in my face. My skin gets greasier, I break out, my face turns red, and it also swells up. Not cute y’all. Not cute at all.

Make sure to listen to your body to discover which foods are triggers for you. It is going to be different for everybody. Some people can’t eat dairy or they will get cystic acne. Some people can eat everything and their skin still looks great. If you want to eat foods that will improve your skin,  eat more veggies and look into things like collagen peptides or Spirulina.

Not Getting Enough Sleep

I have talked at length about my struggle to get more sleep. I totally get how hard it is. There is just so much to do in a day and only 24 hours in the day. When you need time for your side hustle or the gym or a social life that time has to come from somewhere.

Obviously getting your life together so you can get more sleep, is hard. But the results are totally worth it. Sleep is so vital to our overall health. It is also when you are sleeping that your body repairs damage to your cells. More sleep means you are more likely to have clear, glowing skin.

    I’ll be honest; I do quite a few of these (sweat face). It’s so hard to quit though! I love my hot showers so much T_T; although I guess it helps that my water heater sucks so I can’t ALWAYS burn my skin off…

    That does make me wonder though… are hot springs bad?

      That’s a good question about the hot springs. Hot springs have a lot of minerals in them, many of which are good for the skin. I think the hot shower is bad because of the frequency. I’m guessing most people only go to a hot spring occasionally.
